Seaside's Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off

October 10th, 2009 marked the debut of Seaside's Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off! It was a fun and different event that brought together people from all over the state to show off their giant (and not so giant) pumpkins and compete for some serious prize money!

There were pumpkins everywhere! The PGVG growers brought giant ones for the main competition and Clatsop County residents brought smaller ones for the "Locals" contest.

There was a pumpkin patch with pumpkins donated by Roloff Farms in Vernonia, Oregon, home of the TV series "Little People, Big World". The proceeds from the sale of the pumpkins went to the Seaside Food Bank. We also had a 50/50 contest, "Guess the Weight of the Giant Pumpkin", with half the money going to the person who came closest in guessing the weight of the pumpkin and the other half going to the Food Bank. We had some great guesses. The winner was only 12 pounds away from the true weight!

But, the highlight of the day for many was the Giant Pumpkin Drop! Hundreds of people watched as a crane lifted a 900+ pound pumpkin 100 feet in the air and then dropped it on a Bicycle Surrey, smashing the surrey and the pumpkin, too!

The weather was beautiful, everyone had a great time and we are now planning for the 2010 Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off. Come back and see what we have in store for next year!
