Festivus

Celebrate Festivus 2009

December 1st thru December 24th

Downtown Seaside, Oregon

The Seaside Downtown Development Association invites you to enjoy your shopping this holiday season in festive downtown Seaside!

From December 1st to December 24th, downtown Seaside will be celebrating Festivus! Our hopes are to create an inviting atmosphere for everyone to enjoy while shopping local, thus keeping the Seaside dollars in Seaside! Our participating businesses will be offering at least a 10% discount in their stores. Shoppers can also enter to win a giant Christmas Stocking full of gifts from those participating merchants.

So, join in the spirit of the season, stroll the streets, and look for our downtown festivities! Our Downtown Santa will be available for pictures inside the Carousel Mall. A list of participating stores will be in the Daily Astorian’s 4 special Holiday issues starting November 18th and also on local radio stations KAST AM 1370 and KCRX FM 102.3.

Festivus is an annual holiday invented in 1966 by Reader’s Digest writer and editor Dan O’Keefe.  It was introduced to popular culture by O’Keefe’s son Daniel, a scriptwriter for the TV show Seinfeld, on December 18,1997, in the episode ‘The Strike’.  The holiday is celebrated each year on December 23, but many people celebrate it at other times, often to avoid the Christmas rush.

Many people, influenced or inspired by Seinfeld, now celebrate the holiday, in varying degrees of seriousness: some carefully following rules from the TV show or books; others humorously inventing their own versions.
